Four students from Benedict College applied and were chosen to attend The Ohio State University’s 38th annual Graduate and Professional Schools Visitation Days, held November 2-November 4, 2008 in Columbus, Ohio. Students were priviledged to hear from college faculty, staff, administration, and Alum from the Ohio State University’s Graduate Program and representatives throughout the city of Columbus.
Sean Gadson [Junior, Engineering], Ryan Hickman [Senior, Mass Communications], Alexandres Harvey [Junior, Business Finance], and Mark Jackson [Junior, Biology] enjoyed three days of graduate school orientation from OSU’s high ranking faculty, staff, and students; peer mentoring through currently enrolled graduate students, motivational sessions from various speakers such as Dr. Mac Stewart, Special Assistant to the President of Diversity and Vice Provost for Minorty Affairs, Dr, Patrick Osmer, Dean of the Graduate School, and former GPSVD Alumni and current faculty adjunct member, Latreice Branson.
Students mentioned how well prepared they were by the faculty and staff of Benedict College. “I clearly had no intentions on going on the trip, but I went by faith and not by sight. I am truly blessed that this opportunity was put in my footsteps. This experience has really helped me towards furthering my educational and career goals. I now feel better prepared.” says Ryan Hickman.
Mark Jackson added, “Attending the trip as a junior, it was a great opportunity to get a head start on looking into the prestigous medical programs that the Ohio State University has to offer. I am now clear on the steps I must take to reach my goal of attending medical school.”
The second portion of this five day excursion included an additional stop to Bowling Green State University, just 125 miles from the City of Columbus. Students from Benedict College, Claflin University, South Carolina State, Vorhees College and Morris College were greeted by Dr. Lisa C. Chavers, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Director of Project Search, faculty, staff, and college administration of various graduate schools along with currently enrolled graduate students who completed undergraduate studies from South Carolina State, Claflin University and Morris College. Dr. Chavers encouraged the undergraduate students to keep focused on what they are passionate about studying; not to settle at other institutions because of additional funding being offered or higher paying assistanceships or fellowships. Students toured the Bowling Green campus and some met individually with representative from the areas in which they were interested in as some enjoyed fireside chat presentation. Dr. Chavers added to her presentation how grateful she is to maintain such a solid relationship with the HBCU’s.
Over the past ten years, Bowling Green accepted six Benedict College Grauduates to The Bowling Green State University’s Graduate School.
